Over the last month or so, I’ve been doing quite some reading on the book of Hebrews. I’ve been preparing to preach through it with some others in the church where I am Pastor. Hebrews is a fascinating book that many Christians love, it’s so rich in its Christology and also real in the application and natural outworking of a good theology of Jesus and His work. So, let me introduce you to one of the books I’ve read recently on Hebrews, it’s a commentary in the Mentor series from Christian Focus written by Robert Cara.
This commentary is just over 550 pages written by a New Testament professor of Reformed Theological Seminary. This commentary is not necessarily different from other commentaries – there’s the usual information about the book itself, the context, the theories of who wrote Hebrews, the structure of the book, before the verses by verse commentary on the text of Hebrews itself.
One of the things that I like about this book is that Cara dives into the Greek text of Hebrews as you would expect from a more academic commentary, but at the same time he also concludes each section with refections that can help you consider the application of a text. This isn’t a heavy academic commentary of Hebrews, there are plenty of those out there already, but I think it’s a helpful middle-way commentary that sits nicely between something academic and something devotional.
If you’re looking to learn more about Hebrews or considering preaching it soon, this book would be a helpful addition to the pile of materials that will help you wrestle with God’s Word. Get your copy here.
