I guess, if we cannot say sin is punished in hell, but the sinner is, we have to be able to say that the sinner is in hell in consequence of their sin; they are there because they rejected the way of salvation through the Cross for the forgiveness of their sins. In that way, all humankind is destined for condemnation unless they repent (hence, the urgency of the Gospel); my understanding is that the Cross is a rescue mission, not a rubber stamp for Gods elect…

      1. I suppose, in my way of thinking, if the Elect were pre-selected, then the cross would just be a means to make good on that. I have to believe that God meant that He wanted all to be saved—whilst understanding that not all will be—to have any motivation, other than mere duty, to share the Gospel. These are big questions which we won’t know for sure about until all is said and done.

        I found your article very helpful in thinking about Gods love, and I guess, when we hear someone perhaps glibly, perhaps meaningfully, we have to ask what they meant by what they say… as with all theology, there is much to consider.
