Interview; Exposit the Word

One of the things that I’ve been convinced of over the last number of years is the benefit and necessity for expository preaching, preaching consecutively through books of the Bible and letting the text shape your sermon. One of the ministries that I’ve come to know in the past few months is Exposit the Word. Here is an interview with David Knight, the founder of Exposit The Word. I hope that this will help give you a behind the scenes look into Exposit the Word and an insight into the importance of Biblical teaching.

1. What is ‘Exposit the Word’?

Exposit The Word is probably best known for the exciting project that we are just about to finish, which is to have every verse in the Bible taught in an Expository way. We have been Blessed to partner with 66 Outstanding Bible Expositors including Alistair Begg, John Piper, Mark Dever, Conrad Mbewe, as well as being given permission to use the teaching of R.C. Sproul and Martyn Lloyd Jones and many more whom have all taken a book of the Bible and taught line by line.

Our aim is to promote world class sound Bible teaching and resources for free to help people grow in their faith, knowledge and love for the Lord. I have been so encouraged to hear from many people around the world that have benefited from the resources online. We also feature a Blog, Testimonies, Author and Pastor interviews, Hermeneutics teaching and then over the next few months we will move to phase two of the project which will see us record Bible Character Biographies as well as recording many Puritan sermons and resources.

2. Why did you start this ministry?

When I first became a Christian, I used to have a long commute to work (4 hour round trip) so I decided to go on iTunes and download the most popular Christian Podcasts. I just assumed that they were the best as they were the most popular. I now know that popularity isn’t a good indicator for how sound the teaching was. After hearing a lot of Prosperity teaching for months I began to research the people I was listening too. I realised that I was listening to a host of False Teachers pedalling the Prosperity Gospel, and didn’t know what the real Gospel was and that Jesus didn’t actually die so that I could live my best life now.

I then felt lost and didn’t know where to go for sound teaching, but knew I couldn’t continue to listen to the people I was. I founded Exposit The Word so that it could be used as a launch pad for introducing Sound Bible teaching and Teachers.

3. What is the aim of ‘Exposit the Word’?

We want to be that place that comes to mind when asked where is a good place to find sound Bible teaching?. We are already amazed in how the Lord has blessed our platform in not only opening up so many doors to work with amazing Bible teachers, but also in how he has made the website grow so much in such a short space of time. I want to lead Exposit The Word with an open hand and am fully aware and thankful that it is all his. I am thankful that I get to be a part of the Journey.

4. What convinced you that expository preaching is the best way for Christians to grow?

Expository Preaching is the process of the preacher typically teaching through a whole book of the Bible. Line by line, verse by verse. Framing the text as to what it meant in its original context and to its original audience and then applying it to the listener today. Expository Preaching is Biblical Teaching. It follows the flow of the original author and follows the Biblical narrative. The consequences of not teaching in an Expository way are all to clear to see unfortunately as many Christians just do not know or understand the Bible and can easily fall for false teaching.

False teachers like to butcher Bible verses and are crafty in how they manipulate the text. A verse taken from here and then half a verse from another passage and bingo, before you know it, it looks like Jesus wants you to be a Rockstar. The truth be told you can force the Bible to pretty much affirm any false teaching you want when its taken out of context which we see with the Prosperity Gospel.
