Angels

The angelic realm is one of somewhat mystery and myth. Countless stories abound of people seeing angels or knowing someone with a special kind of encounter with an ‘angelic being’. But what do we actually know about angels? Many Christians, sometimes quite rightly, are skeptical of encounter stories.

In this short book, 94 pages with a good size font, Tim Chester helps you think through the topic of angels and what the Bible has to say. But Tim doesn’t come at this topic with a ‘I have all the answers’ attitude. Instead, the book starts with a number of encounters people have had. This approach is helpful because it doesn’t say those with an ‘encounter’ are wrong, but lays all the cards on the table, essentially saying “here is what other people say, and their experience, before we look at what the Bible says”.

Due to short nature of this book I can’t go into the details of every chapter, or else you wouldn’t need to buy the book. Nevertheless, here are the chapters of the books;

  1. The mysterious world of angels (testimonies)
  2. What are angels?
  3. Where are angels?
  4. What do angels do all day?
  5. Where do angels lead us?

In these chapters Tim takes you to Scripture to see what God has to say about His messengers. Tim helpfully points out the dangers in focusing too much on angels, whilst also highlighting the problem that can occur when ignoring angels altogether.

I’ll confess, I haven’t read a copious amount of books on the topics of angels, but of the couple I have read, this is the best because Tim backs up his claims with the Bible. I remember reading one book by a prominent evangelical author and being very disappointed because the author had come to conclusions that aligned more with popular thought rather than biblical convictions. You will not find that approach in this book.

Don’t get me wrong, this still isn’t a comprehensive book, how can it be in just 94 pages, but it is helpful and will take you to key passages, both in the Old and New Testaments to give you a wholistic biblical view of the angelic realm.

This book will take you an afternoon or a morning to read and I personally think that it will be helpful. Buy your copy here.
