Saturday Snippets (July 4)

As well as reading a lot of books, I also read a ton of articles every week. Here are some of the articles that I’ve read recently and have found interesting, helpful, challenging and encouraging. I hope that they will be the same for you, my dear readers.

7 Things a Pastor’s Kid Needs from a Father

“A pastor’s wife bears a great burden, but she usually enters into the ministry willingly. A pastor’s children, though, are carried on the current of their parents’ calling. It is often a life of singular struggle and uncommon needs. These struggles often stem from the failures of the father. This isn’t to cast full blame on pastors for their children’s problems. But it is to say that pastors need to work to be good dads.”

When Our Own Understanding Fails

“I still don’t understand a lot of things, which is why if I leaned on my own understanding, it would fail me. But I know the One who understands all, and it’s on Him that I lean when life doesn’t make sense. I can say with the Psalmist that I have calmed and quieted my soul. And He will always be enough. It is from the humble heart that hope springs forth.
Oh Lord, give us humble hearts.”

This is an interview of the couple who authored ‘Together Through the Storms’, see my review here. They speak about suffering in marriage and about what gets them through it.

What Does ‘Unequally Yoked’ Mean in 2 Corinthians 6?

“Opinions proliferate about what it means to be unequally yoked. Does it pertain to marrying or dating non-believers? Is Paul thinking of business partnerships? Is it in reference to spiritual matters only, or does he also have social factors in mind? What does Paul have in mind when he exhorts believers to not be unequally yoked?”

5 Myths about Hell

This is a thought provoking post and what seems to be a really helpful series of posts on 5 myths about certain topics. Hell is a difficult concept for many Christians, some never talk of it (even deny its existence) whilst others talk about nothing else.

Here you can download the entire journal. These journals have been a great source of encouragement for me, they’ve challenged and spurred me on in ministry. The 9Marks website is a great resource for people to have on their radar.

How Could Forgiveness Possibly Lead to Fear?

“What do you mean I should fear the Lord?” Many Christians think of fear solely in terms of ‘shaking in your boots’ kind of fear. Let Michael Reeves take you to Scripture and teach you wonderfully about what it means to fear the Lord.
